This concert was held May 19 and 20, 1967. Maybe it was the calm before the storm, but the Summer of Love was on its way. Kids, hippies, wannabe hippies, love children, as many as 100,000 were pouring into San Francisco, mostly to the Haight-Ashbury district.

Martha and the Vandellas were an American all-female vocal group started 1957. The group achieved fame in the 1960s and became Motown superstars. Formed by friends Annette Beard, Rosalind Ashford and Gloria Williams, the group eventually included Martha Reeves, who moved up in ranks as lead vocalist of the group after Williams' departure in 1962.

Have to admit I appreciate the legibility of the posters after Wes Wilson's departure. But I'm old now so it's okay if I sound crotchety.

Somehow I have a hard time accepting Martha and the Vandellas as being part of the Summer of Love, hippies, wannabe hippies, love children, pot smoking, psychedelicised, bell bottom wearing, VW mini-van, flower power, make love not war, smoke-em-if-you-got-em, flowers in your hair, don’t bogart that joint, head lice, mind expanding, free love, syphilis toting, duhhhh, give peace a chance, nose bending, acid wasted, free love, high on life, peace love dove culture of San Francisco in the 60’s, but what do I know? I was too busy saving the world with my slide rule...

An interesting time, to be sure.
