We used to use these at BofA in the 70s to mail out the bank statements with the cancelled checks. Ours was a much larger machine that took up a whole table and you ran the envelopes through it on a belt and they were stamped as they went though. We used to bring it to the post office when it ran out.

I remember having to pull out the thicker envelopes that would get stuck in the machine and the ones where the ink for the stamp would smear and couldn't be read. I believe ours was also Pitney-Bowes. There was a section that could be pulled out and carried to the post office to be refilled when it ran out. They were the only ones who could unlock it.

Lots of folks won't know what this item is. It's a postage meter; quite an innovation in it's day. One would take it to the post office and whatever amount of prepaid postage you purchased would be loaded into the machine. Back at the office, as you stamped your mail the cost of the stamp would be deducted from that amount. The kind that I used was a Pitney-Bowes brand. It could be locked so possible unauthorized use was elimated.
