Thanks Jan, that's nice of you to say. I used to post regular updates here when I had too many but now that I've started to cut back I won't be posting here very much any more. I'm just not able to keep up with everything around the house and property and so many things have been neglected because of Jigidi. I will still post occasional updates but things are winding down anyway as far as the chicks go. Only the Fab Four are left and I'm hoping to post them for sale as soon as BG heals.
Edie I was doing my weekend things and had no idea all of this was going on. I am so very sorry you all have had such a rough time of it. I do hope that hawk is gone for good. I will try to get here every day for the updates, even if I'm away. Funny how we all care about them so much. You are a good person. I hope you know that! :)
Thanks zzzz I know that everyone is pulling for them :-))
Thanks Kirsten, I usually only feel like that for a short time and then I'm fine again.
What Faye said is really right on spot.
Oh, Edie! I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling overwhelmed. Although it's perfectly understandable as to why you would be. I wish there was something practical I could do to help you.
Thanks Kirsten and Faye. The infirmary seems to be growing and no one is getting better or dying. I sometimes wish they would hurry up and do one or the other. When I think like that I know I'm getting overwhelmed by it all.
Thanks for the update, Edie...there's nothing that the rest of us can really do but worry...and we do that very well! :)
Gosh Edie. What an awful thing to have happened. I'm glad everyone is still alive, and that you have a physical barrier to protect them with. It's good of you to take the time to update us. I was quite worried when I didn't see you 12 hours ago. Take care, and I wish you and the infirmed all the best. :)))
Thanks everyone. It's been a very busy day outside so I haven't been on Jigidi at all. I'll give a quick update before heading out again. BG made it through the night. He's sitting under the heat lamp but I have not seen him eat or drink. I took some pictures of his head last night but might be too graphic to post. The missing hen was found unharmed. The small bantam coop has overhangs on either side and sometimes the small ones manage to squeeze into them and that's what I was hoping happened. The injured quail is still alive and even laid an egg today though her head is still cocked awkwardly. I have a picture of that as well. Queen Bee is the same, no improvement but she's still eating. Sally, Suzy and Cloud are back upstairs in the loft of the garage in the pen I built for the Silkies. Chicklet and the two smallest chicks have been moved into the pen with the 3 remaining chicks and I have not let them out of that today. If you look at the picture here you will see the fence behind the chicks. This is a portable dog pen which I use to be able to feed the chicks without the adults getting in. Right behind that is the fence that encloses the entire chicken area. It was between these two fences that I found BG laying on his side. He must have run between the two fences and got stuck there. I guess if he hadn't the hawk would have had him. This way the hawk stood on this side of the pen and pecked open BG's head and neck. When the lady was here yesterday who adopted the cat and bought 4 chicks she had closed the door to the pen where the 3 remaining chicks live or one of them may have been the target. I have now covered the area over the two coops with and old mesh pool cover from my son's pool. I did this last year when the hawk attacked and he only struck the one time. It takes hours to get it secured in place and will only be good till the snow comes. Then I'll have to take it down. Have to head out again, I don't want to leave them unattended for long periods at a time. If there is any other news tomorrow I will try and update again. Thanks everyone for caring about what happens to them.
Oh no, so sorry to read of another hawk attack Edie, and am rooting for BG too.
I'm so sorry, Edie. I hope BG's going to be all right.
Not GB--he's been the rock of the fab four!!! I'm so sorry for all you have to put up with after all of the hard work you put in. Thanks for the update and the good news on the cat and chick adoptions. Keep us posted on BG and the sister cat if you can, Edie. Thanks for thinking of us in all of this--these guys brightened lots of days for me.
Come on BG...fight back. Hope you find the missing hen...poor little things.
Such trauma for BG. So very sad. Compassion for both of you. - sharon
Edie, just caught this update. I feel so sad and sorry this happened. I pray Big Guy will come through. Thinking of you and your chicks, Edie.
So far she just has one but wants the second one if I'm prepared to part with her Brie. I think they'll have a great home. She's already emailed me that the entire family is in love with her and she's loving all the attention. On a sad note. This may be the last picture of these four. The hawk attacked again this afternoon and BG is in dire condition. Have him inside under a heat lamp hoping he won't go into shock but there was a lot of damage done to his head and neck. One hen is missing but could still be hiding.
They just look like four good friends having a light lunch together.Great news on the cats being adopted - I hope they have as good a new home as they have had with you
Thanks everyone for your comments. Glad to see that you haven't forgotten them. Today was a busy day for me. After much deliberation I had decided to put one of my cats up for adoption through the rescue. A very nice lady came today and took her and wants the sister as well if I'm prepared to part with her. When she saw my chicken she mentioned that she had been thinking of getting some so I told her that I happened to have some for sale. She ended up taking 4 from the group of 7 so I may somehow try and combine the two groups now and see how that goes. It would be less work for me. Not sure Ardy about the size, it there is a difference it's very little.Sorry Peterels I'm not comfortable making a puzzle from my avatar.
Thanks Edie, it is great to see them again - and still together.
Ah, the Fab Four. That one little one seems smaller than the other or is it just because she/he is scrunched down eating? Chicklet has gotten so dark. I'm delighted to see them. Thanks, Edie.
Awwwww! So glad! :))
Hurrah!!! Our fab four still together! Thanks for the update and wonderful pics, Edie. :-)
I have lots of chickens too. Many different races. Can you put your picture - smoking a cigar - on line. ThanksPeterels
