Why are you reporting this puzzle?

My favorite Packard. I am from the 50's era, so I am mostly interested in the style and power. To me this is the most favorite Packard, that is so sporty, and powerful with it's supercharged engine. and stylish body wise of the airplane speed styling. I love the fins and the whole scoop front end.

Although it does remind me of Jar Jar Binks of Star Wars fame. Episode I The Phantom Menace of the Prequel Trilogy.

I know that the supercharger only has a two barrel carburetor, and the previous Packard engine was larger cubic inches, with a four barrel carburetor with the same horsepower. ,, and I realize that with all the supercharger stuff it ended up weighing the same weight. They should have just kept the Packard engine instead, but nonetheless, a very neat car to me.

Thanks Vince, I think I'll do it again too. My time was 9:30 to beat. 10:02 on redo.
The picture was picked because of the lighting and most of the background has been cropped out, to make the best puzzle as possible, with bright contrasting sharp colors.
I know it is accepted when I see the solves number. Sometimes I know the pictures I choose are not going to get much interest... solvers are not much interested in dashes or close details. They like whole cars standing out by themselves, and mostly front quarter views. I pay attention, but some puzzles are made just for me.
I do not do puzzles larger than medium, but I make very large puzzles when asked,,, for others who really want a challenge.
Pat.

Just did this again. I am sure it did not take me as long as it did before. I am going to go back and go through your puzzles again.

thanks redavanti. That's real good to know.
Pat.

Fins on these are steel not fiberglass.

There are a few good books out there that cover the Studebaker-Packard merger, but your description is essentially correct. I had the luxury of being able to reference the Studebaker-Packard corporate archives while they were in storage here at Syracuse University (All of the material has since been sent to the Studebaker Museum in South Bend, Indiana where it belongs). Fascinating stuff to an automotive historian such as myself. Both companies had serious issues that they thought could potentially be solved by merging - They gambled, and they lost.

RickAgain

From what I've read over the years, Packard had more money while Studebaker had more dealers, but after the "merger" it was discovered Studebaker was in far worse condition than imagined, creating a money drain that prevented either from succeeding.

Hey Rick, I know you do. and you are not alone... thanks for the comment.
There is a bunch of Packard lovers out there that don't consider this to be a Packard at all. I heard that Packard bought out Studebaker? I don't know for sure how that took place? but, if so, then these would be Packard Studebakers... ha ha... hard pill to swallow. It's all about where the money went. I think it all went into the pocked of the president of Studebaker when he retired. ,,, so would that make the truth be that the Avanti was actually the Packard Avanti? ha ha... something to think about..

And, I do agree with you that this Packard Hawk does look like a dressed up Studebaker Hawk. The best part is that I love the Studebaker Hawk too.. My brother did not like the Studebaker Hawks... but my Dad did??? My brother said the Studebaker was just some body parts screwed onto the same old body. He was right there too, because that is exactly what Studebaker did. They wore out those old press body parts dies. and the fins were actually fiberglass. Yes, These fins on this Packard are Fiberglass. screwed on and seams covered with trim piece. ha ha... but still to me I like the look... ?? It is still quite sporty. looking.

Studebaker had to completely re tool to make the Larks. That's why they went out of business. ,,, they could never recover. and the Avanti cost twice as much as a Corvette.
Money talks. You got to follow the money.
Pat.

Ha-ha. Everything you've said about the '58 Packard, I think the opposite. In fact, I can't even consider this as anything other than a customized Studebaker.

mr_51_vic_ss

thank you fyreline.

Many find the Duncan McRae styling to be a little off-putting . . . I kind of like it, myself. These cars were always rare, even when new, and are even more so now. They are quite spirited performers, and right in keeping with the style of the late 1950s.
