Why are you reporting this puzzle?

I found a snake in my patio. I called the city animal control who transferred me to the police who transferred me to dead animal department (snake not dead) and was transferred again {SIGH} and was told to call a pest control company. I looked up the snake online and I think this is it. A small gopher snake, so I let it loose.

The most common snake in northern California -- and one often mistaken for a rattlesnake -- is the Pacific gopher snake. Gopher snakes range in color from gray to dark brown and sport alternating black and brown spots along the length of their bodies. This snake is diurnal, meaning it hunts during the day and sleeps at night. When threatened, the snake will flatten its body and shake its tail. While it has no rattle, a rattling sound can be heard in dry grasses, leading observers to believe it to be a rattlesnake. The gopher snake is nonvenomous and not harmful to humans.

And @rswestley I made a puzzle with your in mind, so go look for it!

firstdawn

This is an old post and wolflady mentions snakes on another puzzle so I flagged her to this old one.

Hismorts

Ah. It's a gopher snake Dawn. They won't hurt you. They sure do eat rodents though. I used to have a gopher problem and a gopher snake just about this size cleared them out. And the squirrels. Gone. And I have see it since. Been a good few weeks, too.

Oh, never mind. I just read some more of your post and see you already knew what it was. Sorry!! :-)

bevpuzzler8

@rswestley
Where the H have you been or is it me ....where have I been...Glad ta see ya. Hot enough for you.
It is bloody hot here and will not quit...Take care...Shine up those boots!!! Bev. 8-26-2020

rswestley

I do make people sick, but I am usually not fatal.... with the emphasis on "usually"...

ParsonWayne

So are you venomous, TIM?

rswestley

I'm with you Bev. The only good snake is one that wears a size 12 combat boot... what a coincidence... I just happen to have a pair of size 12 combat boots....

bevpuzzler8

I detest serpents! Venomous or non.
My granddaughter, 15yrs old, has a python. My son had to take it to the Vet. because is has a respiratory problem.
160 dollars charge. They have to give it a shot of whatever, everyday.
Hope you are OK!!

firstdawn

@wolflady LOL

ParsonWayne

My wife would never gopher a snake like that

CJ45

Thanks for that Bubble.

Bubble

He's very attractive Dawn, but you were right not to go too near, just in case !
@CJ45
Clive when I worked at the Medical Research in Mill Hill, we had 90 acres there and plenty of slow worms and grass snakes - love them. We also had a lot of garter snakes, similar to grass snakes down in Victoria, especially at the berry picking farms.ꓚꔚꓛ

bevpuzzler8

@Hismorts
Hi Bob-O ….glad to see ya. How's by you in the B Bear country?

dustydog

Nope, don't like snakes! When I lived out in the country, I had a lot of grass snakes. Sneaky little buggers! One didn't see them until one almost stepped on one! I didn't kill any, as they are poison-less, but will bite if pushed to it. I had an "arrangement" with them....If they stayed out of sight, I left them alone.

parrotman33

I'm glad that you were cautious, Dawn! It doesn't look that small in the photo. Good pic BTW! XXX

MarinaNephele

What a lovely puzzle and photo. I'm glad you didn't kill the snake. Snakes are useful reptiles as long as people keep their distance. Marina.

CJ45

We only have grass snakes and slow worms here but I have never seen either.

manicpuzzler

Beautiful, I do like snakes :))

PutterDutt

You had quite an adventure, Dawn, but I know that snakes are not slimy (ex- had a python and a boa) and the while snake phobia is because of the snake luring Eve into ignoring what she'd been told.

Hismorts

LOL. It's not the devil. It's a harmless little gopher snake. Probably just looking for some shade or a drink. But my Ma was the same way. Couldn't stand 'em. Just petrified of all snakes.

When I lived in Ridgecrest, I put a 4x8 plywood sheet out behind the garage on rocks so the rattlers could crawl under the board and escape the sun. Scorpions, too. In the morning I would lift the rope tied to the edge of the board and go to town with my little 410. Especially in the summer. I didn't eat the scorpion's though. But it kept them out of the yard and away from the neighbor's house.

djp

They just might! I had a hamburger at an old roadhouse way, way into the outback of Australia - tasted real "furry" and, after telling some locals, was told it was probably about 1/2 beef and 1/2 Roo Roadkill!

rswestley

What do you mean it's not harmful to humans? I wet my pants just looking at this creature...

Hismorts

Nah, It's one of nature's gifts and I try to never waste. I have had a few snakeskin bands in my days. He really does taste a lot like chicken. More than most people would guess. I'm surprised Micky D's doesn't use them in their McNuggets!! LOL!!

djp

No parts wasted Bob?

Hismorts

Dawn. I see this and I immediately think."You start the fire and I'll get the sticks and we'll be dining in no time!" Tastes like chicken only a little different. And with horsehair borders the skin makes a nice hatband.

Good for you! My neighbor had everyone in area terrified, our children outdoors, When I hurried in to find a terrified milk snake about to be bashed with a shovel by the only Dad home that day. After arguing with him I end it by reaching down and picked up the defenseless creature and told Dad I release him far from here, you watch the kids! Snakes are such helpful animals and all people can think is it's creepy and slimy, Wrong on both counts. Bless you,

niccolino59

Beautiful markings. Glad you let it loose.

ParsonWayne

Contrary to my wife's opinion that there is no such thing as a beautiful snake, I have to agree with Thurman.

djp

Dawn, on first glance I thought "Diamondback" . . . but then no diamonds on this lovely guy - or is it a girl? Maybe a male snake will give her some diamonds to charm her - it worked for me!

Fishes

Yikes!

teamac

I do not like snakes so that would not have been a happy sight to me....Glad you are safe and all is well. ☺♥

bevpuzzler8

A snake is a snake and I do not like serpents venomous or non., My granddaughter has a snake in her aquarium and it eats mice. My son purchases at the pet shop. Ugh...

lefty50

At this point, I can only think "Glad it wasn't in my patio". Good job on figuring it out. I would have called city commissioner and let him figure out who to contact.

Juba1010

I’ve saved several of these from the road where I used to live.

iceng

While you are green and ignored with services that you have payed money to
(animal control, police, dead dept) .. You should try to discover how this snake was able to get into your patio and block the path before something else gets in :-))

pasta

EEEEEKKKKK!!!!

thurman

That is a handsome snake. Thank you for letting it go.

ChuiViv

Good for you in letting this harmless creature go free! It's quite attractive.
