Oh wow that is quite a chequered history, thanks for clearing that up. Bit like Guernsey's history going between British and French control plus having been occupied by Germany during WWII. Does make me thankful that live in NZ with no shared borders. Understand (now) that you live in France.

Andie2a1383

Jillian ,this is Alsatia (Alsace) ,not Germany ,it's a French province although it was twice annexed by Germany
1871–1918 Franco-Prussian War (with France losing the war) causes French cession of Alsace/Alsatia to the German Empire
1919–1940 At the end of WWI the Germans are defeated .The treaty of Versailles causes German cession of Alsace/Alsatia to France.
1940–1944 Nazi Germany conquers Alsace, establishing Gau Baden-Elsaß .
As the Nazis lose the war Alsace/Alsatia is ceded back to France in 1945.
Quite complicated ..
