My statement below regarding what is NOT being taught these days is true. I got it straight from an elementary teacher friend. Penmanship practice is a thing of the past. They are not allowed to teach even a little of many traditional subjects, even if they want to do so. And I just mentioned the subjects traditionally thought of as 'English'. Other subjects such as History---even our own---, Geography, & Social Studies are only lightly skimmed over. Many kids don't know all our States much less many prominent countries of the world. It is so sad & it makes me embarrassed for how the rest of the world must perceive us.................

I can't believe how many high school seniors are allowed to graduate without knowing how to properly use the word 'too', or even spell the simplest of words, for that matter. It's very easy to remember that "too" means also, or it may be used to enhance the word following it, such as "Some people show too many fake smiles". (I'm surprised if they even spell the word 'people' correctly.)

I probably shouldn't comment on proper punctuation, though, since I tend to use far too many commas and parentheses, as well as too many question marks and exclamation points to dramatize my sentences (and I use more dashes and double-dashes than are necessary). Aren't the written words and sentences I'm expressing here clearly demonstrate the points I'm trying to make??????????????????!!!! Maybe I should follow the 'KISS' rule: 'Keep it simple, silly'!

And I missed the ? mark but didn't feel like typing it over again.

I don't understand why folks here don't credit the source of their puzzles. This is from a T-shirt that is for sale. Don't puzzlers concern themselves with others' intellectual property rights.

That could have been a catastrophic apostrophic disaster!!

Not just the comma, you know. It's the apostrophe, too. My mother sent me a heart wrenching text one day, voicing her fears about how our lives were about to change because of the impending death of a close family my haste to sympathize and console her, I didn't check my spelling. Instead of texting a sympathetic statement that we could make it through whatever life throws at us...oops. I ended up texting a most callous statement, "WELL DEAL WITH IT."

Lucky for me, my mother loves me and has a great sense of humor. She texted me right back and told me I was being removed from her will "for want of an apostrophe."

No, it is not just the US. We have a major problem here with Text-speak. Teachers have said that the language is fluid and developing all the time and they are happy to allow text words in essays. What has happened to our wonderful language?
Lynn Truss has written an excellent book on punctuation - "Eats, Shoots and Leaves - The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation."
'A panda walks into a cafe. he orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air.
"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.
"I'm a panda," he says, at the door. "Look it up."
The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.
"PANDA. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."
And please - don't get me started on possessive apostrophes!
Great puzzle - love the words LOL!

I agree with you, Ann, regarding the U.S. people who are 'educated' here appearing to be illiterate (although I seem to use TOO many commas!)

LOL! This is SO me as anyone who has read a few of my comments know! I don't think I could write without commas. They make so much difference in your intent, just as this t-shirt shows. It breaks my heart that proper composition, spelling, & grammar are not being taught in elementary schools anymore. The rest of the world must think we in the USA are totally illiterate---& we just about are. Thanks, Dizy, for showing something so dear to my heart, if to the hearts of only a few others...............
