I hope yours stick to enjoying your plants....could be they have a different appetite that these few here. I do have other bees around and I rejoice that they are here. I don’t think they will be interested in these traps. If the good bees ever do, I will take the traps down immediately!!
Hi Megabelle :-) Thanks for the link - interesting - and I even subscribed to the newsletter! I had very bad damage to 2 garden doors by termites a few years ago so can relate to your problem. Had no idea about these bees - I always loved them and really enjoy seeing them in my garden!!! :-)
I have been feeling guilty after thinking about these bees...turns out there are 300 varieties or something like that....so....maybe our destructive ones are mainly local to this area....anyway...found this most interesting article if anyone is interested....I think I will keep my trap for a while to save my house and benches this year....but....it does give me pause.http://www.motherearthnews.com/nature-and-environment/wildlife/carpenter-bees-ze0z1305zpit
megabelle this photo was taken in my garden.... our houses are made of stone so they cannot do any damage to us. I have never heard of the damage that you mention being done here by the local ones - maybe they have evolved differently here. Sorry to hear about your problems!
alliebono....we are not killing honey bees....these are carpenter bees who love to eat wood and will attack houses and benches and decks....they usually live in forest and eat dead trees, but....occasionally (more frequently than desired) they will come to town and dine on your house. These are not the beneficial bees that you are encouraging. I hope you never lure these to your place.
I would never trap a lovely bee like this - I encourage them into my garden - I also have stacks of bamboo lying flat to encourage them to nest in. Hope you aren't killing them Dixiegal and megabelle??!!
megabelle2000, they DO work! I'm putting mine up as soon as I see the first carpenter bee of this season. They are such a pest and leave a big mess on my deck...besides drilling holes in the wood. I read that they can drill a hole as long as 10 feet. I put my trap up last year a little too late and it caught only two bees.
