“This Overview shows vibrantly colored lichens and mosses in Russia’s Sakha Republic, also known as Yakutia. This vegetation provides sustenance for reindeer, which many locals rely on for milk and meat. This particular area is located in the Arctic Circle, roughly 650 miles (1,046 km) northeast of Yakutsk — the Republic’s capital city — and has an average January temperature of -41.3°F (-40.7°C).”

It looks edible, doesn't it, Sal? :-)

Pretty and yummy

Bill_I_Am

You're welcome, mereagle. Thanks for stopping by!

mereagle

Nature painted another beauty, thank you. Interesting color combinations .

Bill_I_Am

Yes it does, Valerie!

DivaAnn

It looks like a colorful elephant ear plant.

Bill_I_Am

Thanks, Rebecca. Those are some really interesting images. Too bad there isn't a way to zoom way in to the image above.

Bill_I_Am

Mike, we'll all be victims of climate change one way or another. :-\

RebeccaB

Here's another, albeit still overhead, view of the area - https://images.app.goo.gl/4QvzQNRoY9NXFm4x9

Bill_I_Am

Thanks, Judy. Makes you wonder how any place could be so cold and so colorful at the same time.

Elsiesw

So beautiful at any temp but in this cold only a wow suffices.

Bill_I_Am

I know, and I haven't found anything that shows them.

Bluestockings

Somewhat. I'm just trying to visualize what this concentration of colorful lichens and mosses must look like on the ground. I'd love to see it!

Bill_I_Am

Yes, that's exactly what it looks like, Blue. I viewed these coordinates in Google Maps satellite view (which is not at all colorful—maybe a different time of the year?) and measured from the far tip of the larger black body on the left to the far tip of the larger black body on the right and it was 5.34 mi (8.59 km). Does that help?

Bill_I_Am

Sounds good, Returner. Thank you!

Bluestockings

This is amazing. My first thought was "close-up of a caladium leaf." @t53de70

Any idea of how much area is shown in this photo?

Returner

Watermelon Crush. Someone else will have to concoct its recipe -- or structure. Thanks.

Bill_I_Am

Watermelon something?

Returner

Somehow this looks like one of the confections from @patw -- I just don't know what it would be called.

Bill_I_Am

Thanks, Rebecca. If this were much further south it would be a very different story.

RebeccaB

I thought maybe this was going to be the feeding grounds for pink flamingoes. But I guess not at the Arctic Circle. :) Good puzzle.
