Thank you for this, Rucello. I was not familiar with the Solvay Conferences.

It's a sterling example of practical industry helping pure science. Ernest Solvay was a Belgian industrialist who in 1911 convened (and sponsored) the first Conference by invitation only. It was such a success that beginning in 1913 the regular Solvay Conferences began. These were in Physics. The next could not be held until after WWI in 1921 and in 1922 Solvay began a similar series of Chemistry conferences.

They both continue today, meeting every few years, assembling the greatest minds in Physics and Chemistry. They discuss not only science, but the approaches that may be taken to research and to thinking about discoveries and the paths that are constantly opening.

It's easy to see why these conferences were an instant success, when you can assemble luminaries such as Max Planck, Neils Bohr, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein along with 20 or 30 other leaders in their fields.

I learn something every day, and today I have learned something remarkable!

Thanks again, Rucello.
