Victorian Convict Van
Why are you reporting this puzzle?
Apparently 5 were built, the 1st being ready for use in 1889.
A description in The Railway Locomotive Magazine of May 1900 stated that "The coaches are of very substantial construction and are more remarkable for utility than comfort. Each van runs on four wheels, and is divided by longitudinal partitions into six compartments opening off a transverse corridor in the centre of the car. Each coach carries 30 to 35 passengers. The convict compartments measure (approx.) 2ft 3ins wide by 7ft long and would contain five or six men, standing room only"
I repeat my confession of using information gathered by Mr. Pinnegar. On this occasion I have actually copied his description of the van, I did not want to lose one scrap of information on this fascinating vehicle. Seems a really good idea, we could learn from our ancestors.
