"Scottish painter, etcher, and draughtsman, born in Glasgow, the son of a clergyman. He abandoned brief unhappy careers in commerce and law to study at *Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. Most of his work consisted of landscapes (especially scenes of mountains) and architectural views, and he is best known for his etchings of buildings, including Gothic churches on the Continent—rich and sombre works with which he established a reputation as one of the outstanding printmakers of the day."

There's your answer, Pat: "...decorative deployment of silver birch trees...." Interesting painting and a fun puzzle, Gayle. Thanks!

Ben Ledi must have been inspirational to him Neville, he has the peak positively aglow in this painting. It's like a 'close encounter' is taking place behind the peak! First thing that I thought of when I saw this was the fascinating sand sculptures in a big glass jar that you see at craft fairs and such. Thanks Gayle.

Such an earthy painting. Pun intended. You can really see the texture of the painting like there is a thin layer of paint on the canvas. The contrast between the sky and the earth is nice. I like it. Thanks for sharing.

The layers of distance make this a fun puzzle to piece. Art-wise, I'm not understanding why those trees are so spindly. Certainly no crowding here as with a certain German forest some of us are familiar with. :-)

I like the openness and wide skies of both your landscapes today Gayle. They give me a feeling of distance and freedom.
Tx, didi
