As every B-17 was built, workers tightened all the screws, and riveted every rivet, and installed every panel and cable and motor part with minute differences. As a result each plane flew with its own characteristics, its own idiosyncracies. Each plane required a particular touch to fly.

But there was one B-17 which astounded everybody. It was perfect. All the little variables cancelled each other out. The plane practically flew itself off the test runway. It balanced and leveled itself without any effort by the pilot. The yoke was dead straight. That B-17 didn't drift or pull left or right, it didn't climb or lose altitude. It responded exactly to the pilot's movements of the controls.

It was perfect.
