Snow can turn a city into a magical winter wonderland, but it can also leave devastation and destruction behind. We take a look at some of the worst snowstorms in the history of the US.

The Massachusetts blizzard of 2005

It's not often you can confidently ski through Boston city center. However the blizzard of 2005 hit much of Massachusetts hard, with reports of five inches of snow falling every hour between January 22-23. But with the snow occurring over a weekend, many locals braved the cold to make the most of the pristine powder. The blizzard dropped 22.5 inches (1.8 feet) of snow overall, which was whipped up into towering drifts due to gusts that topped 80 miles per hour. Many properties suffered damage in the storm.

I lived in the Boston area during the Blizzard of '78 - it looked just like the picture in this puzzle, Pat, and I'm surprised I didn't see it as one of your series of the 16 worst snowstorms in US history!

That's what I thought Lorna ..

Ardy .. That's what happens here .. The wind can drift the snow and close down one of our roads in a heartbeat …

I remember reading about this one. I once spent a summer at Boston U. and went to college about 40 miles from Boston. Big snowstorms are not that unusual but the winds in this one made HUGE drifts which were a major problem. Thanks, Pat.

Wow, that is a phenomenal amount of snow.

Nanab you were lucky as most loose the electric

nanab

I remember this one with a shiver. We ran out of room to put all the snow that we had plowed and shoveled. It was horrible, but on the bright side we never lost our electric power or heat.
