This large Joe Hack-designed tug was built in 1956 by Defoe Shipbuilding of Bay City, Michigan as the William C. Gaynor for the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company. In 1988 she was sold to Lake Michigan Contractors and renamed Captain Barnaby. In the 1990s her original Cleveland 8-498 was replaced with an EMD 12-645. MCM Marine of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan purchased the tug in 2002, and restored her original name of William C. Gaynor. In 2014, she was purchased by Great Lakes Dock & Materials of Muskegon, MI. Selvick Marine Towing of Sturgeon Bay, WI purchased the Gaynor in 2017. In 2019, Selvick Marine Towing was renamed Sarter Marine Towing after being sold to new ownership.

The William C. Gaynor works in ship docking and icebreaking out of Sturgeon Bay.
