Born in South Carolina in 1901 to a poor African-American family, William Henry Johnson nonetheless managed to attain classical training in New York City. He became a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance, turning from his earlier expressionist style to the traditions of Afro-America, producing work characterized by its stunning, eloquent, folk art simplicity. The Smithsonian Institute holds a large collection of his work, with images available on line.
