Enthroned at the young age of 18, the confident and strong-willed Wilhelmina won the respect and admiration of her country, proving that a woman was as capable as a man at leading a nation through major crises. Queen Wilhelmina had a keen knowledge of business matters and investments, which led her to become the richest woman of her time and the first-ever female billionaire.

Thank you, mikemac, for the information. So interesting!

We have a beautiful State Park in Arkansas named for Queen Wilhelmina. It was Dutch investors that brought the railroad to the rugged mountains of Western Arkansas and they built an inn atop one of the highest mountains in the Ouachita Range and named the Inn after her. This was the 1890's and only then did some something resembling civilization come into this rural and rugged land.

I scoff at those who say the the United States should not have a woman president. History provides us with many examples of effective female rulers. From Nefertiti and Cleopatra to Catherine the Great, Queen Victoria, Queen Wilhelmina, Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel and many more, women have been as effective as men in leadership roles throughout history and Wilhelmina is certainly one of those that we should remember as one of the world's great leaders.
