Hale Aspacio Woodruff (1900-1980) was an African-American artist known for his murals, paintings, and prints. Woodruff won an award which enabled him to spend four years studying in Paris from 1927-31. In 1936 Woodruff went to Mexico to study as an apprentice under the famed muralist Diego Rivera, learning his fresco technique and becoming interested in portrayal of figures. After his return to the United States, Woodruff applied his understanding of Post-Impressionism and Cubism to painting for social advocacy.
Charles Henry Alston (1907-1977) was an African-American painter, sculptor, illustrator, muralist and teacher who was active in the Harlem Renaissance. He was the first African-American supervisor for the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. In 1990 Alston's bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. became the first image of an African American displayed at the White House.
