This shot was taken on October 11. I also have a slew of shots of a yellow-legged snowy, maybe the same one as I was near the same location, taken on October 15. The yellow is brighter in the sunshine, but still real even in shadow.

Hmmm, I have seen yellow running up the back of their black legs during breeding season.

I wondered if the yellow legs might have to do with age, but I think I like your sun idea better. Will have to look more closely at ours!

No, I missed that thread entirely. Now that you mention it, I'd heard about them beating their fish first, but never seen it. I have seen them eating fish whole, but always minnows or slightly larger.

I've been a trail patrol volunteer since 2010, seeing snowy egrets for 10 years, and never noticed yellow legs, but look at this shot I found on the Internet:

Maybe the bird AND the sun just have to be at the right angle, kind of like a green heron rarely showing any green. :-)

Did you notice the thread about kingfishers beating the fish they catch on a solid surface before eating them? I had never seen that before schutkleur mentioned it, and then I saw it within a few days. I've still seen my belted kingfishers swallowing the fish without tenderizing it first, but at least now I know that they do it sometimes. I love Jigidi University! :-)

I was going to comment on the yellow legs too, Ginni. I've also only ever noticed yellow feet. Another of your fabulous photos. Thanks.

Our great egrets, which I think is a close cousin to your great white heron, and our snowy egrets hang around both the river and the lake all year round. I've never noticed yellow legs, though, just yellow feet!

Beautiful!!! I'm a bit envious. I've only ever seen our 'great white heron' (great egret?) and only very occasionally.

Golden legs!! We have a great picture of one taken on a Florida beach.
