Thanks, Sarah. Your Dad was very clever to build one of these. A lot of yachts have a dagger board that drops through the centre of the keel for the same reason but you have reminded me of the Thames sailing barges that have the side board similar to this. They are shallow draughted too. I'll post one as a jig soon. :-))
John, this is a sketch of the design. The side boards were needed because it didn't have a deep ll and when tacking one would need to lower the leeward board to prevent drift.
