The Cubs are unique in so many ways. One afternoon many years ago (it had to be afternoon because they didn't have lights at Wrigley Field) the Cubs sent in a replacement pitcher. The TV showed him walking toward the camera; you couldn't see the name on his back. Legendary Cubs announcer Harry Carey said, "And of course, there's no need to tell you who this is." AND HE DIDN'T! It was a while before I happened to get a glimpse of his name! Only the Cubs. :-)

:-)

Other note.....in light of the missing DYR hostess, I've put up one of my "Things Organized Neatly" puzzles.....it's small solace, but perhaps it will soften the blow a bit. Here's the first....will probably post another one shortly:

randlindsly

:-) We're in violent agreement!

ekopug1

Rand, I'm also a diehard, long time Giants fans . . . win or lose. But we do pick up new fans just because of the WS wins alone. I was merely paying respect to those generations of Cubs fans where being a Cub fan is its own reward. Yes, the DH is the worst thing that that has happened to baseball in my life . . . . if you're going to play ball, grab a stick!

randlindsly

Dem's fighting words! I'm a long standing Giants fan, win or lose! With that said, I'm also standing with the Cubs, mostly because all of us National League guys need to stick together against the evil and moral decay that is the designated hitter. The DH is the first sign of the Apocalypse.

ekopug1

Pat, Cubs fans are among the very best in all of baseball because, win or lose, they still support the Cubs. The Giants probably pick up a couple million new fans in the years they have been fortunate enough to win it all, but many of those will jump ship for the next World Series winner. Cubs fans are of hearty stock and in a class all their own!

randlindsly

I thank the court for extending mercy in its latest finding. I will endeavor to be a more considerate and attentive DYRer going forward. :-)

patsquire

Well don't forget, we've got Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals coming this evening, too.

It must be nice to have a beloved team that actually wins sometimes. My beloved team is the Cubs!

ekopug1

Rand, no thanks are necessary, I was happy to do my part . . . other than temporarily holding down the 10 slot on the board. :-) There will be no "Chinese justice" for your absence and "shirking" your responsibilities . . . Pat has already rendered an appropriate sentence!

Pat, great recommendation of Emanuel Ax. I like your "grey" reference as well as the baseball analogy . . . typing this as I wait for my beloved Giants to take the field in Philly, currently in rain delay. :-)

I myself, personally, have heard Mr. Ax in a concert hall and in one evening I became a true and loyal fan. He is astounding! In fact, I have a theory based on my years of viewing "The X-Files" that he is one of the aliens they called a "grey" who has relocated to earth, but instead of becoming a baseball great (Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays were all greys) he became a classical pianist.

I know this because when he plays the piano MORE NOTES come out of it than any other pianist in history could ever achieve.

What he does is, he increases the tempo faster and faster and then very sneakily, while his hands are moving too fast for anyone to see him do it, he extrudes a sixth finger on each hand! Suddenly more notes are filling the concert hall than humanly possible! I have HEARD THIS PHENOMENON with my own ears! That's when I figured it out! Then when he slows back down he withdraws the extra fingers, so nobody will be the wiser.

YUP, UH-HUH, I'm sure of it!

patsquire

As Mr. Ax was my suggestion, I think I should be the judge, jury and sentencer on the matter of rand's offer to "...accept any punishment the crowd deems appropriate." In my judicious opinion his past services to DYRland far outweigh any minor slip-ups such as this one, and a full acquittal, pardon, free pass and Get Out Of Jail Free card are in order. JUDGMENT PRONOUNCED! (BANG!) (That was a gavel, not a shot ☺ ).

And now, moving on to my own apology. . . . . . . it was indeed my suggestion to feature Emanuel Ax on DYR, and yet I was absent when he appeared! How shocking! You've noticed my spotty attendance lately, and last night just didn't work out for me. SORRY!

randlindsly

Sorry I didn't make it tonight.....did my penance and moved the leaderboard back to 10*......thanks Eko for picking up my weak sorry ass. Got sucked into a Game of Thrones marathon and my Jigidi responsibilities completely slipped my mind.....will accept any punishment the crowd deems appropriate. :-)

ekopug1

Lady C, certainly no apology needed . . . .

ekopug1

:)

Peter Frampton?

Magicfingers

Sorry Sissel not Hans this time but thank you for guessing
Well done Squish and

Emanuel Ax (born 8 June 1949) is a Grammy-winning American classical pianist.Ax lives in New York City with his wife, pianist Yoko Nozaki, and has two children, Joey and Sarah. As Monday sees the birthday of this lovely gentleman I think we should celebrate his talent. Here are but two very short pieces (2 mins and 4 mins)

Lady_C

Ok this lovely gent plays the piano

DYR

ah - my apologies - yes you are right about the similarities :o))

ekopug1

No, LC, you did not get anything wrong . . . I know this is not Jonathon Winters, I was only pointing out their similar facial characteristics.

DYR

No I don't EP but I googled him before answering you - did I get it wrong, in which case I've got the humble pie

ekopug1

yes, Elton John also.

squishy2

He looks a bit like Elton John - any connection?

ekopug1

Do you know who I'm talking about, Lady C?

DYR

Sorry EP but thanks for the guess

ekopug1

Kind of looks like the comedic actor Jonathon Winters . . . .

DYR

that is an excellent comparison Sissel

DYR

yes a classical gent and a favourite of one of our friends on here

Sissel

He looks like one of the portraits hanging for vote on the 18. June :-)

squishy2

I don't have a clue who he is - but he has a kind face. From his clothes and demeanour - a more highbrow musician than usual?

DYR

This lovely gentleman has a birthday on Monday - I left his 'instrument' off the pic.
