In 1984 Ronald Reagan named the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. Reagan recognized the popularity of ice cream in the United States (90% of the nation's population consumes ice cream) and stated that these two events should be observed with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri is credited with inventing the ice cream cone. On July 23, 1904 at the World's Fair in St. Louis, he filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream to make the first ice cream cone. There is some controversy over this claim. Italo Marchiony of New York City filed a patent for the ice cream cone months before the fair opened. And, he was selling lemon ice in comes as early as 1896.

Thanks Katie, that strawberry ice cream sounds delicious... so nice when it is made with real dairy and not the artificial stuff they so often use!!

I'm delighted you enjoyed it Mimi - thanks :~)

Sounds wonderful Rosie - I think pistachio is a fabulous flavour too... my BB doesn't like it at all... so if I buy it I have to eat the lot!!! I've never made it myself... but we bought a machine to try a few weeks ago... it's still in the box LOL!

Fantastic day to celebrate and had strawberry shortcake with vanilla bean ice cream earlier even before I knew. And a good Italian gelato (pistachio) is the second best after homemade ice cream. Thanks for another great WK puzzle.

Adorable puzzle Mandy, thanks!

A fabulous day Mandy! I'm rather late getting here, but there's time for me to have some ice cream this evening. I'll be getting my favorite at the Ohio State Fair on Wednesday - the dairy barn has scrumptious strawberry ice cream made from fresh milk with big pieces of strawberry.

Thanks Ardy - I thought the animal images were fun too!

Yes Barb - you were caught on camera!! I hope it was really yummy!!

Thanks Pat - I hope you enjoyed your Klondike Bar earlier!

You're so right Edie, Italian ice-cream cannot be beaten for taste - what a sweet gesture your long ago boyfriend made in buying it for you :~)

You're welcome Josie, I hope you enjoyed some yummy ice cream today, and I'm glad you enjoyed the piggie... he/she sure was celebrating in style!

Sounds like an ideal solution whatnauts... enjoy!! Thanks :~)

This is certainly a yummy day. I have frozen yogurt in my freezer, so I'll celebrate with some of that!

Yummmmm, now that's eating. Well, sort of. Thank you for the tea cup piggy, he/she is precious. Yes, lets all celebrate this one.

Love ice cream and really love good Italian gelato. Had a boyfriend years ago that would stop in Little Italy and pick up small containers of my four favourite flavours and bring them when he came to visit. Better than flowers any day :-))

Oh my this is my knid of day..... I will make sure I have a Klondike Bar this afternoon.... Thanks Mandy

No trouble celebrating this day, Mandy ... I see you've even caught me in the act (lol). Thanks for such a fun WK puzzle. :-))

Great images, Mandy. Especially love the animals ones - non-human animals that is. Thanks for the fun. I'll think about how nice it is but won't indulge.
