Copacabana is a Bolivian town on the shores of Lake Titicaca, near the Altiplano region. Built between Mount Calvario and Mount Niño Calvario, the town has approximately 6,000 inhabitants.
Copacabana's religious celebrations, cultural patrimony, and traditional religious festivals are well known throughout Bolivia. It is also a base for exploring Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna, islands with sacred Incan archaeological sites.
The town has a large Spanish colonial 16th-century shrine, the Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana. It houses the image of the Virgen de Copacabana. The shrine is situated near Copacabana's main square, Plaza 2 de Febrero and it is a major pilgrimage site with Moorish domes and the Virgen de Copacabana statue. Our Lady of Copacabana is the patron saint of Bolivia.
