Diego, the 100 plus year-old tortoise who fathered 900 babies was returned to the wild on Espanola Island this month.
He was found in the San Diego Zoo, where he had lived about 30 years before joining the breeding program. He had a big impact on the program with his strong personality and not shy about mating.
The breeding program brought the Espanola tortoise population back from the brink.
Now after more than 40 years, the island is home to a stable population of 2000.
