West Virginia: Separated, but keeping the name

When West Virginia withdrew from Virginia in 1861 because it didn't agree with Virginia's seceding from the Union, it considered the names, 'Kanawha,' 'Vandalia,' 'Augusta,' 'Allegheny,' 'New Virginia,' and 'Western Virginia.' But despite their political disagreement with Virginia, residents in the western half of the state still retained a fondness for the name.

pkin38, that's the truth! I, too, have family in P-burg!

Oh Becca I grew up along the Ohio side of the river close to Parkersburg .. That is where my mother and father were from … I have a granddaughter that lives in Charleston … Her hubby is a doctor at the hospital .. Small world .. :-)))

Becca48

pkin38, it truly is breathtakingly beautiful. I77 & 79 go right thru my hometown of Charleston, and, north of Charleston, 77 runs thru some of the most bucolic farmland ever.

Thanks so much everyone Sandra, Lorna, Ardy, LD, Max-Tooney, Wendy, Fran, Becca48 and Iris for the great comments .. MY oldest brother supervised the building of interstate 77 thru West Virginia .. He always said it was a beautiful sight from the top of the mountains …

Really very pretty there in the fall.

ringleader, you're correct. It isn't Harper's Ferry. It's the New River Gorge, one of my fav places in the world. I love my native West Virginia!

What an incredible and beautiful scenic photo, and a very interesting story concerning the name............Wendy

Googled it--Harpers Ferry has two bridges, so I guess I answered my own question, haha. Nice image nonetheless!

I don't think this is Harpers Ferry but could be the area. It's a beautiful state. Thanks, Pat. Last one tomorrow?

It is a beautiful state. Thanks, Pat.

Max_Tooney

Is this Harpers Ferry? (Looks like it, but I'm not sure.)

Interestingly enough after WV split off from VA, there were many West Virginians that fought for the Confederacy. The early origins of the Hatfield (WV) McCoy (KY) feud was in part fueled by this fact.
