Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Like many non-Americans, I have been watching the approach of Florence with some concern. It is frustrating to think I can't do anything to help from so far away - though it is literally an entire continent away, I spent time working several years ago in North Carolina, and met some really good people there.

I was doing aerial survey work in NC for FEMA. We were mapping coastal and low-lying areas with airborne LIDAR to get extremely accurate topographical information. After Katrina, FEMA contracted us to fly coastal areas of low-lying parts of the US East Coast so that with this level of detail they could see exactly what would be inundated if flooding took place, depending on the forecast height of the flooding and storm surge.

So although I can't help at this moment, it's heartening to know that I played a key role in gathering important information flying those missions. Data that is being used now to help guide where (and who) is at risk of flooding. Makes me feel good to know that I contributed somehow. It's not often we get to feel part of something so much bigger than us, in a theatre as big as a hurricane.

Will probably be up half the night watching the news on the scene - godspeed NC and SC

Being practically your neighbour, Wendy, I feel the same. I can't imagine what this storm must be like. I'm worried for all those stubborn or misinformed enough to have decided to stay put in this storm. Already there are many people trapped in their attics due to rising water, and the storm is too powerful for rescuers to reach them.

Puts me in mind of the wildfire evacuations here this summer. Just not worth it to insist on staying put...

I pray for all the people in line for this horrid storm. I feel so grateful that here in B.C. we never get any storms like that. We had thunder the other day, and that is something we do not get much of either. I cannot even begin to imagine what the people in the Carolinas are going through..........Wendy

@Jaklien I'm not a religious person, but I think of praying as projecting a positive attitude.
I love your name. My sister was Jacqueline.

Jaklien

Sorry, but praying will not help :-(

Isaly

I live inland and expect to have flooding and mudslides. My prayers are going out to all in harms way......cyndi

I follow the situation on the East Coast through the news and the newspaper.
Unimaginable, an annually recurring phenomenon.

Still dangerous but Florence has been downgraded to a category 1 storm. This means winds will still be very strong, just not as strong. 9which at least means less wind damage, but not less flood damage).

Mazy

Well, I didn't really help in this crisis - just provided the platform for those who gathered information that others can use to help.

Thank you, Mazy, for the work you've done to help in this crisis. I've lived in the Carolina's and have relatives who still live there. They live inland, but we do worry about the flooding. May God be with the all the people affected.
