Yes, the sand at this California beach is black—and it's considered one of the most beautiful black-sand beaches on the U.S. mainland. It's not ideal for swimmers since the waves are rough, but it's great for those who want to bird watch at a less-crowded beach. Also, keep in mind that at high tide the beach will be narrow so check tide charts before you go. Californiabeaches.com notes that some locals consider this a clothing-optional beach (consider this your warning.)

Ardy, Lorna, S, LD, Maria and Shirley .. I didn't know t here was such thing as black sand .. But then the water softener company I had put a sand filter on before the softener and the sand that comes out of that is real black .. I always said it was coal .. I guess I was wrong .. Hugs

We have black sand infront of mom's ricefield too Pat...and when the sun's rays touches the surface, it sparkles like diamonds.

I didn't know California had a black sand beach. Visited the one in Hawaii. Interesting. The sand was coarser than the usual beach sand. Guess I would opt for clothing. Don't want to scare the birds. ☺ Thanks,, Pat. A fun series.
