I learned about trompe l'oeil painting many years ago, when I was little, and my neighbor had a painting in her living room with what looked like a torn corner that I always wanted to pull off--and the impulse never left, even years after I knew that it was just a trick... And then I read many home-decorating magazines and architectural books, where the technique was used to transform a plain column into a "marble" one, and even a no-view wall into a Tuscan "landscape" seen through a "window".
But these incredible works of art, on such a massive scale, which even incorporate "passersby" into the scene, are so much more wonderful! Thanks again!
3D murals painted on the sides of buildings by Trompe L'oeil (trick-of-the-eye) artist John Pugh: This mural at the Cafe Trompe L'oeil, San Jose , California , is entitled "Art Imitating Life Imitating Art Imitating Life."This customer doesn't leave at closing time. And, there is no doorway or stairs to go through or climb... and the statue never needs dusting.
