Great picture! An engineer I worked with years ago was a ball turret gunner in B-17's over Germany and he too made it home. Told some wild stories about riding in that little ball under the plane!!!
Reading the comments, My respect to the brave men one and all.
Have a friend in the VFW with me that flew 32 missions over Germany as a tail gunner in the B-17.
My grandfather was a top turret gunner/flight engineer in a B-17. His best friend was a bombardier in a B-24. Both were lucky enough to get in their 30 and come home. My grandfather actually flew his last two on D-Day and saw the invasion from the air, never got to meet him but luckily he kept a diary of all his missions. Quite priceless to me.
I'm glad you posted this. My father was a B 24 navigator and was KIA over Normandy. I had been looking for a picture of a B 24 to post but couldn't find any that worked with the format. maybe with the new format I can now post one myself. TrickieWoo
