Thank you so much, twosmiths, for answering my questions! The reason I asked about what you did for the backgrounds is because my husband has tried different things. The one that he has found he likes best is buying felt at the craft store and cutting it to size. He staples it to the back and then does the frame. Later on this evening I will post a couple more of his pieces.

Thanks for the lovely comments Joyful67. I got some heavy black poster board at the craft shop to use as the background. Then I used a spray adhesive to coat the back of the wood (1/4" poplar) and pressed it onto the poster board. Trim the edges and used a hot glue gun to secure to the frame (oak).
Absolutely beautiful! I love how the grain of the wood works in with his face. Do you sell your creations?
