Honorable Mention, Animals in their Environment
Author: Marco Gaiotti (IT)
Location: Gunung Leuser National Park (Indonesia)
Description: A wild Sumatran orangutan in Gunung Leuser National Park, in Northern Sumatra. This species is critically endangered according to the IUCN red list, due to habitat loss, as a consequence of palm oil exploitation and logging. Less than 3,500 orangutans still survive in the wild. We found this big male while hiking into the primary forest, and after initial mistrust, it became confident allowing me to take some wide-angle shots.

You're welcome, stunned.

Wonderful photographer, nice puzzle thanks so much.

Bill_I_Am

I agree, bbeeton. Mostly we don't know or appreciate how magnificent they are.

Bill_I_Am

You're right on both counts, bdmc. I often feel trapped among the apes in this jungle. :-/

Bill_I_Am

Yes, he is, Pat. :-)

I remember watching Tarzan King of the Jungle on television when I was a kid. It was so exciting! Now I'm ashamed of how we've trashed the world of these creatures. It's not ours to trash, and they were here first. You're welcome, luly, and your right. It is so sad.

Of all the great apes, I would be most happy to be related to an orangutan. I've never met one in a forest, but the zoo inhabitants (at least the ones that were obviously well cared for) have always impressed me as being very curious and personable.

bdmc

I remember Tarzan facing a big Gorilla that pounded his chest and said "Bundalo Kill" if i remember it correctly. That is a long time ago when i was a Tarzan fan and wanted to go live in the Jungle with all the animals. It turns out that i live in a concrete Jungle with all the animals now.Not quite the way i envisioned it all.But then what is?

bdmc

Some days i feel like this guy....Up a tree....Life goes on....Other days up a creek without a paddle....

patw

He's a handsome fellow.

luly

This made me think of "Tarzán Rey de la Selva", which I listened on the radio when I was a kid.
This is so great but too bad, it's an endangered species, very sad. :-/ Thanks, Bill.
