Thanks niccolino.

What a curious but beautiful bird - great photo!

robryan

Thanks snooker - I'm amazed that it travelled so far!!

Loved that song - used to sing it in the Canadian grade schools.

robryan

Yes Patti - they are a member of the Kingfisher family. Thanks.
Thanks Gary.

GARY43

Gorgeous bird Rob! Thanks! That was fun! Lot's of color in this one! Like the blue streaks through his feathers...Gary.

PLG1958

It looks and sounds (thanks, Chickie, for the link) much like a kingfisher. Great set, Robryan. Thanks!

robryan

I've never actually heard of them being raised as a pet Heidi. I know people have regular birds who come in and sit on veranda rails to be fed - but they are wild birds, free to come & go.
Thanks Meadowhawk - I agree!!

Meadowhawk

heheh I remember the song well. :) This is a lovely portrait - lots of detail in the colouring. Very beautiful. :)

Surreal_Heidi

The blue winged (and tailed) variety is GORGEOUS! I bet they'd make an entertaining pet .... but expensive to raise; they're carnivores.

robryan

Yes DrJean - it's very well known here & in lots of other countries!! Thanks for dropping by.

Have you ever heard this one? "Kookaburra sits in the old oak tree; merry, merry bird of the bush is he; laugh, Kookaburra laugh! Kookaburra joy you life must be!" (A song kids sing about the Kookaburra.)

robryan

Thanks dondi.
I bet pg - they're LOUD!!
Thanks lyndee - they belong in the Kingfisher family.
Thanks chickie!! In the open air it sounds about twice as loud!!
Thanks pumpkin!
Thanks Ann - it's amazing where that song has spread to!!

annjax

"----eating all the gum drops he can see. Laugh, kookaburra,-------". Thanks, Robin. I'm not from Australia, never even been there, but I've always liked that song, & he is a beauty............

pumpkinhead

He is a bit big headed, but guess his beauty has gone to his head.

chickiemama

I found it on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0ZbykXlg6Q

lyndee

He's a stout looking thing. He does come across as being pretty big-headed! I wish we had them here. Thanks.

photogent

And a very quiet bird that little fat bird. There were two of them in a pet shop and when they started you had to hold your ears.

robryan

It is too buckeye!! makes me feel happy!!
Thanks Shirley - & happy Australia Day!! Even if it is a wet one!!

dondi

Pretty colors - I like that sky blue against the rich dark blue.

shirley68

'Merry merry king of the bush is he...' Gorgeous fellow, Thanks Rob.

buckeye425

Interesting bird! It must be fun to hear them laugh.

robryan

No Deborah :)) He's just a beautiful bird!! We have some nesting near our place - but not the Blue-winged variety - & they laugh most days. Thanks.
I agree chookie. Now I'll be humming that tune :))) - thanks.

chookies

'The kookaburra sits in the old gum tree....' Thanks rob, he certainly is a beauty!

Jawz

Does this fellow have an ego problem? Looks like he's got a swelled head! :DDD
