“These two mighty galaxies are pulling each other apart. Known as The Mice because they have such long tails, each large spiral galaxy has actually passed through the other. Their long tails are drawn out by strong gravitational tides rather than collisions of their individual stars. Because the distances are so large, the cosmic interaction takes place in slow motion -- over hundreds of millions of years. They will probably collide again and again over the next billion years until they coalesce to form a single galaxy. NGC 4676 lies about 300 million light-years away toward the constellation of Bernice's Hair (Coma Berenices) and are likely members of the Coma Cluster of Galaxies. Not often imaged in small telescopes, this field of view catches the faint tidal tails several hundred thousand light-years long.”

I hear it and later don't notice it too. I've had it since 2002, so I have learned to pretty much ignore it.

McClock

Crazy but during the day i never hear it but now i've seen your comment I do! And during the night of course! Certainly not you fault!

Bill_I_Am

I hadn't thought about that, Ron. I have it too!

McClock

Strangely it would be horrible for me to be out there as all I would hear would be my tinnitus, which due to the conversations I have and the noises of traffic, industry and people I rarely think about! Getting old aint no joyride!

Bill_I_Am

I would also like some of that quiet, stunned. You're very welcome. :-)

When I do these puzzles I always think about how quiet it is out there. Must be nice without all the noise we have going on around our planet today. Thanks to RebeccaB for the video too and of course to you Bill for all the great posts.

Bill_I_Am

:-))) to both of you.

RebeccaB

Only in the simplest terms, and only because I read the explanation. :)

McClock

You understand what´s happenning Rebecca? Amazing!

RebeccaB

Did you (plural - everyone) ever imagine you'd not only live in an age where you could see this, but even understand what's happening?? Mindblowing...

Bill_I_Am

Very dramatic video! Thanks for sharing it, Rebecca.

Short video of a black hole destroying a star: https://www.yahoo.com/news/nasa-satellite-captures-black-hole-075408086.html

Nicely put, Returner. And you're welcome!

Bill_I_Am

I'm pleased to hear this is a favorite, Hjalmar. Thanks for visiting and sharing your comment with us.

Returner

A long pas de deux these two galaxies are having. A choice image, Bill. Thanks.

Hjalmar

A favorite object . Weather in the Coma Cluster or the Virgo cluster (my pick), I would need my atlas to be sure.
