Ginni2 3 April 2020 We used to have a lot more American avocets at the coastal trails, but the serious birders who do the count for us are seeing fewer and fewer. I think the ones they see are in the back country, where you need a spotting scope to see the birds clearly. I used to see them at the lake when the water was high, but that's not going to happen any more. The city is keeping the lake at 40% full. I think the lake is closed to hiking these days anyway. I'm lucky my local trails are still open. schutkleur 3 April 2020 Thanks Lia. Such a sad story though. I didn't expect there to be godwits in your area either. Maybe he was lost a little. They usually travel in groups and I never saw them in, or above, a town either. schutkleur 3 April 2020 That they are Ginni. I love seeing avocets, there are quite a few in the polder at the moment. You do have avocets too, don't you? :) Lia 3 April 2020 They are beauties!And... very photo-genic Yesterday a godwit (grutto) flew against the glass panes of stairwell of our appartment building (trappenhuis raam) and was dead. Such a pity. I took a picture, as remembrance.I didn't even know we had godwits around here, and surely not in the middle of a small town. Ginni2 3 April 2020 They are sooooo striking! Great shot!
