Evidently this is not the only painting marked likewise. https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21518/lot/44/

In another site, I found, "It is not surprising that one of his favorite artists was Vincent van Gogh, whose impassioned vision of nature, tendered with brilliant color and vigorous stroke, Burliuk admired greatly."

The only thing that I can think is that perhaps Burlick painted this in the same manner as van Gogh painted in 1888. That's a real stretch and I know absolutely zip about art history.

I wondered about that too, tseliot.

Do we know why it says "Vincent 1888.... Arles" on the bottom? Was it an homage to Van Gogh? (actually -- the answer to that is probably "um...DUH.") I know nothing about this artist.

This was a really fun puzzle to solve, even though I dislike pointillism type techniques in paintings. Thanks, Gayle!
