In Today's Daily Jigsaw Puzzle, we visit the Dunedin Railway Station in Dunedin on New Zealand's South Island. It is a masterpiece of Edwardian Baroque architecture. Designed by George Troup, a government architect renowned for his ornate style, the station was completed in 1906 during the peak of railway expansion in New Zealand.

Troup's design earned him the affectionate nickname "Gingerbread George" because of the building's elaborate flourishes, including the detailed kowhaiwhai patterns that are typically Maori.

Constructed from dark basalt rocks from Kokonga in the Strath-Taieri and light Oamaru stone facings, the station is distinguished by its use of local materials. The interior is just as grand, featuring a 750-foot-long main platform—the longest in New Zealand—and a mosaic floor comprised of 750,000 Minton tiles.

Once the busiest station in New Zealand, Dunedin Railway Station saw up to 100 trains a day during its peak usage years. Today, it serves mainly tourist trains, such as the Taieri Gorge Railway, which offers scenic journeys through the rugged and picturesque Taieri River Gorge. The station is a departure point for these excursions and an attraction, drawing visitors to admire its grand architecture and historical displays. Each Saturday morning, the station hosts a popular farmers' market in its grand hall, adding to its community role in Dunedin ♥

Being a South Islander it is lovely to see Dunedins Railway Station here. It is a lovely building outside and inside. Thank you

What a fantastic looking building, too many of our British stations have been either done away with or converted to hideous “modern” buildings of concrete and glass.

Hurrah we are in NZ, I live in Auckland. Dunedin station is fabulous, what a wonderful building, one of the treasures of Dunedin, thanks.

Hello from Dunedin, NZ! What a surprise this morning to see our railway station. It's a beautiful building, housing among others our Otago Art Society and its exhibitions. The Farmers' market is held on the grounds outside the station, though, not in the hall.
