Hi, Glad you enjoyed it. I took this photo on Wednesday, 13th September, 1978. I know the date because I had spent the previous afternoon queuing for return tickets for "Evita", which was in it's second week (and sold out for months!) at the Prince Edward theatre, around the corner. To pass the time, I read "84,Charing Cross Rd" for the first time, and loved it. Hence the photo, on the following day. The shop had closed in 1970, but had remained pretty much untouched. You can see there is a pane of glass missing on the first floor. It later became a Classical music store, and the Marks & Co sign above the front door was preserved on an inside wall. Today it is a restaurant. The building is listed, but i don't know if they still have the sign. There is a plaque on the wall outside commemorating the shop and Helene Hanff's book. Take a look at this site for more details on the shop's history.... www.84charingcrossroad.co.uk/
By the way, I DID get a ticket for "Evita" that night, and, just before curtain, a group of people hurried in, among them - John Travolta & Olivia Newton John, who were in town for the Premiere of "Grease", the following night.
Happy days !
I loved doing this puzzle - I read the book years ago and loved it so much! Is this an old picture? I don't think the store is there any more. Thanks for putting a 'face' to my memories!
