It is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the U.S. West Coast, first lit on February 1, 1855. To this day, it still functions as an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse is situated on the Monterey Peninsula. It marks the northernmost point of Monterey Bay, helping to guide ships through the rocky coastline.

Constructed with a distinctive squat white cylindrical tower, the lighthouse initially used a Fresnel lens, which remains in place today. The well-preserved keeper's house attached to the tower provides a glimpse into 19th-century maritime life.
