"Just Say No"
October 11, 1983
The phrase "Just Say No" first emerged on October 11, 1982 when Nancy Reagan was visiting Longfellow Elementary School in Oakland, California. When asked by a schoolgirl what to do if she was offered drugs, she responded: "Just say no." This is another URBAN MYTH!. The phrase “just say no” did not originate with Nancy Reagan. Since the beginning of time, when a girl is about to go out on a date, Mothers have been telling their daughters to "just say no!". I know this from personal experience.... in my youth, I was told "NO!" countless times..... which made me wonder why the human race didn’t become extinct

First U.S. Woman to Walk in Space
October 11, 1984
On this date, October 11, 1984, Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan while aboard the space shuttle Challenger, became the first woman to walk in space. Dr. Sullivan cut her space walk short when she noticed there were no shopping malls in space.

Ironer Roosevelt (sometimes spelt Eleanor Roosevelt)
Born October 11, 1884
American First Lady, wife of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Ironer Roosevelt popularized the sport of starching and ironing underwear (now you know the real reason why Franklin Roosevelt spent much of his time in a wheel chair)

First Airline In-Flight Meal
October 11, 1919
A cold boxed lunch containing a Spam sandwich, crispy Spam chips and a frosted Spam cupcake is served on Handley Page Transport flights. Though the lunch sucked, it opened a whole new lucrative field for lawyers representing victims of in-flight food poisoning.

YMCA Founder - Sir George Williams
Born October 11, 1821 d. 1905
Sir George Williams founded the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in 1844. He wanted to create a place where young men would not be tempted into sin. Unbeknowst to Sir George Williams, one his great great grandsons would grow up to be a Cop, another would be an Indian, and the others would be a G.I., a biker, a construction worker and a cowboy. Later, the six great great grandsons would create a travel agency catering to young men...
"Young man, there's a place you can go
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time

It's fun to stay at the YMCA
It's fun to stay at the YMCA"

James Earle Fraser
Died October 11, 1953 b. 1876
American sculptor. In 1913, James Earle Fraser was commissioned to create an original design for the U.S. nickel. James Earle Fraser had originally planned to design the U.S. Spam nickel, but when he realized Spam would not be created until 1937, he designed the U.S. Buffalo nickel. (Won't somebody pleeeeez tell Mr. James Earle Fraser that in America we have "BISON"? (Buffalos are found throughout Asia and Africa while Bison are found mostly in North America)

Where?

jals

I'm still here. I'm just so fast, you can't see me.

msbonne

Where did you go?

jals

Did you see that?
I'm practicing my ninja moves.

msbonne

You move like a blur to me.

jals

Thanks for making me look faster than I am.

msbonne

that may be quick to you jals, but I had to go to my library, check the files and locate the book prior to responding. Remember, I am about 700 hours behind you timewise.

jals

Yes you do!
I know you're a sloth and everything about you is slow, but you came up with that pretty quickly. Well done, Sloth!

msbonne

I have a book on that.

jals

ha ha Juba, you are right. ;-)

Sloth, you may very well have bees wax in your ears. If you use a flame and tilt your ear, you can melt it right out. Adult Supervision is required.

Juba1010

Lol jals. That was a short hike for that joke. :-)

msbonne

I thought that was bees wax in my ears.

jals

Juba,
Be careful when you walk under those trees!

Actually Sloth it is in your head. The bees crawled in your ears and are now in your head. Be careful for their little appendages, like the bees knees.

Juba1010

It might be bees up there in the tree with you a Hoff. Do you have to come down more often that once a week when you eat spam fruitcake? Sounds a little heavy.

msbonne

So that buzzing sound around me is NOT just in my head?

rswestley

With whom do I have the pleasure of speaking? Juba? Judy? Judy two, Juba Bub? With flavors such as citrus, lemongrass, chamomile, mint, dead rat and camel's sweat, it's easy to.understand why you would prefer to eat soap, but remember, with every can of Boneless Spam Legs I sell, I make a small donation to help under-privileged drones to soar skyward and pursue their dream of spying on someone.... a worthy cause supported by voyeurs everywhere...

Juba1010

I’d rather eat soap John. But that’s just me. Don’t let him boss you around Bev. He keeps accusing me of multiple personalities. SQUIRREL woof woof woof

jals

Bev,
Yes we are! Such fun people on here!!!
You have a wonderful day yourself. :-)

Sloth, you can have my share. I'm on a diet. ;-)

msbonne

Spam Fruitcake is excellent, provided you barbecue the Spam first.

@jals
@rswestley
I have more fun on jigidi….We are a team!!! No kidding.
Spam Fruitcake? Sounds yucky!!!
Have a great day!!:))

jals

Bev,
I'm in complete agreement. I do not like this time change and getting dark so early.

John,
What do I have to do to get banned from your Spam fruitcake list?

rswestley

Bev! Why I never! You can't be talking like that in Jigidiland. This is a family site! If the king of Jigidiland heard you talking like that, you would be banished! If I EVER hear you use the word "adult" in my presence again, I will.... I will.... I will take you off of my Christmas mailing list... which means no Spam fruitcake for you....

@bevpuzzler8

@rswestley

Sinners in the Sun is a 1932 American pre-Code romantic drama film directed by Alexander Hall, and starring Carole Lombard, Chester Morris, Adrienne Ames and Alison Skipworth.
I thought that looked like Chester Morris....I like him as Boston Blackie. Remembering the old days.

John,
No shhugar I laughed out loud and my daughter came to see what the heck I was laughing about.
I read some of your remarks and she said, does he have a problem and I said No that is his M.O.
There is a program on TV and it is called "Kids say the funniest things"....There should be a program like that for "Adults say the strangest things"...what do you think? You'd fit right in!! Bev. :))
11-9-19 it is 5:57p.m. and dark. Do not like time change!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Juba1010

Lol John. And LOL msbonne. Great idea Bub. The soup tends to run through the slots in the spoons. :-)

Bubble

BB - so many t shirts to choose from and they're so 'reasonable' - I'll order 2 each, (messy eaters you know). 8 petite size, 2 'normal' and 6 extra large (will cut the labels out, don't want to offend). C.O.D. (❀ᴗ❀)

msbonne

Are we sure it was not Norman Lear?

I seem to recall a greatly controversial episode of All In The Family where Edith gets conned into buying a set of sporks, and Meathead and Gloria both work with her to hide them from Archie.

rswestley

Juba, as legal counsel to one Mr. Samuel W. Francis, I must insist that you cease and desist in referencing the "spork" as being the creation of Mr. Edward Lear. In Edward Lear's 'fictional' essay entitled "The Owl and the Pussycat" he mentions the existence of a runcible spoon, NOT a spork. Notice Lear's "Owl and the Pussycat" was a FICTIONAL essay... Webster defines fictional as "something invented by the imagination"... such as "pie in the sky" (have you noticed a pie in the sky lately?) or three little piggies, one living in a stick house, one in a straw house and one living in a brick house.... I know of no piggies that can afford to pay property taxes. Furthermore the source of the word "runcible" is undeniable. 'runcible" is a 'portmanteau-word'... "run" - move at a speed faster than a walk. "Cybil" - a woman reputed to have multiple personality disorder. Hence the definition of "runcible" (or runcybil) is defined as several women running a relay race in the Summer Olympics... NOT an eating utensil! Furthermore, a US patent (U.S. Patent #147,119 ) was issued in 1874 to Mr. Samuel W. Francis for a combined spoon, fork, and knife closely resembling the modern "spork". I say all that to say this... While this rambling is not the most satisfying rebuttal to your claim that Mr. Lear created the spork, I believe I have accomplished being "sensibly nonsensical", which was the intent of this nonsense.

ps - Judy, you may want to pass over this comment... I doubt you will learn anything new here... :-)

@Juba1010

nanab

Bub, I can't 'run up' some T-shirts for the guys but I'd be happy to order some.
Lots to choose from here:

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=spam+t-shirt+photo&qpvt=spam+t-shirt+photo&FORM=IGRE

Pick your favorite and let me know how many we need & sizes, they have Spam socks too.

Juba1010

Sorry, correction: Edward Lear was the author. Norman Lear was an American TV producer. Duh. Consider the source. Lol

jals

I've again learned something new on here. :-)
Thanks Juba!

Juba1010

It is the original spork created by the author Norman Lear. It’s a cross between grapefruit spoon and fork. My grandson loves “The Owl and The Pussycat “. :-)

jals

So a runcible spoon is like a spork?

Bubble

Hurrah - so pleased (❀ᴗ❀)

Juba1010

Power came back on yesterday. Fridge is running. Spoons in the freezer. All is well. :-)

Bubble

Juba !! How's it going over there - hope all is ok?

A runcible spoon, quite a rarity today, you must be sure to bring it along.... probably best to put it in the freezer for an hour, easier to carve the Spam. Whoops, I'm giving away trade secrets now, never mind as long as you don't tell anyone else ! (❀ᴗ❀)

BB I was hoping you could run up some of the T shirts for the guys if I give you their sizes?(❀ᴗ❀)

Juba1010

Can I come Bub? I’ll bring my own runcible spoon.

nanab

I'm in, I have to get one of those T-shirts.

msbonne

Seems reasonable to me. I would happily pay that.

Bubble

@nanab

Ha ha BB, unbelievable ......….just watched the video, missed my vocation and this opens up a whole new spectrum for us.
Having the contest at my house next year and I'm nominating myself for Head Judge and Chief Taster.

I expect we'll all have to practice hard for the contest and thank goodness I didn't throw away my 5 dozen out of date cans. Enough for all the club and more to spare. I don't thinks $15 for each vintage can of Spam is too much, do you? Spam Out ! (❀ᴗ❀)

nanab

Wisconsin spam carving contest video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDz2C_ip0HE

rswestley

Aha! That explains it! I had thought it may have been Blue Man Group preparing for their show in the Golden Wigwam

Bub, being the well bred person you are, I’m sure you are aware that canned meat artisans have held Annual Spam Carving Contests in Madison, Wisconsin for the past 25+ years. The carving “Spamalot” won several years ago, but other notable entries have included Spam Elliot, Spam Bob Squarepants, Spam Jam, the Trojan Spam, a Spam Tiki among many others. Perhaps I will see you there this year? I’ll even buy you a Spam Sundae...

msbonne

It was an early winter, and the natives looked blue from the cold.

That is how Merica got the colors for our flag.

Bubble

John we're going to friends for Thanksgiving on Sunday and I was going to make two of my bread puddings. On reflection, and your recommendation, I'm changing them to Spam cakes with vintage 15 year old Spam. With Spam icing, Spam candles and Spam bakeware, its Spam Spam Spam all the way to Spamalot. (❀ᴗ❀)

rswestley

Thank you one and all! I'm not accustomed to getting so much mental stimulation in one sitting. I will be wearing my cranial heating pad and a loose fitting hat the rest of the day. I think (and I use that term loosely) I may need to take the rest of the day off...

msbonne, I had completely forgotten about Columbus and his historic "fake moon landing". But you will need to explain to me the "red white and blue coastline". I understand the "red", (native Americans) and the "white", (Leif Erikson eating a Danish pastry while celebrating the opening of another Volvo dealership), but what was the "blue" that Columbus saw? Are Sasquatch really blue? or was it the native Primary Colored people (red, blue and yellow)? Or was Columbus just recovering from a hard night of sasparilla and seed pods?

BB - a person in my condition does not need to eat Spam before going to bed. I get Spam intravenously while I sleep

Jubba - great question! I AM glad to see you, but I'm an omnivore so yes, it could be a loaf of Spam in my pocket. I'm not a vegetarian so you can assume it is not tofu or seaweed. (I will be sure to tag you on future history lessons)

Max, (our very own Siskel and Ebert), I have no idea who is putting "the moves" on Carole Lombard, but I suspected it was Bela Lugosi about to dine on some white meat for dinner

Ellen, my "take on history" is always based on facts. I may go off-road occasionally, but this is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth... as seen by a guy that has had one who has eaten one too many fruit cakes

Judy, if Carole Lombard's bare feet caused a "stir", I'm guessing her bare legs must have caused a "blender". And who is Chester Morris? From the looks of this picture, Chester Morris may have been the original "Chester the Molester". I thought Bob Hope was the only one with a ski slope nose... did Chester Morris ever compete in the Winter Olympics?

Bub - it's your lucky day! I've depleted my supply of out of date Spam. But I am sure you are aware that out of date Spam is considered a real treat. Since Spam is 85% lard, it becomes soft and gooey with age and easily pours into cupcake liners for a really tasty after dinner treat

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to add to the lunacy... Porky Pig and Woody Woodpecker would be proud!

jals

True story here. We went out the other night for drinks for a good friend's birthday. She does a lot of substitute teaching in the schools and her daughter is a 6th grade Math teacher. They were talking about a student (girl) whose mother told her now is the time for her to experiment with boys. Sounded like the mother and most of her family were teen moms. We couldn't believe a mom would tell her child that, but I don't know that other than biologically, this woman has been much of a mother. So sad...
She could have used John's "Just say no!" campaign.

djp

So John . . . you were the source of women telling their girls to say "no"! Before you, mothers were very happy that a man was interested enough in their daughters that they were eager to let them go out.

Bubble

Almost right - consolation prize ? (❀ᴗ❀)

Max_Tooney

Carole Lombard--of course!

jals

Cary Grant was also in the movie, Sinners in the Sun.

John,
I was waiting for the song and dance by the grandsons.

jals

The movie was Sinners in the Sun, with Carole Lombard and Chester Morris. Evidently showing her bare feet caused a stir.
As for bison and buffalo, John, most people I know call them buffalo. We are uneducated here in the midwest, I guess. Or maybe it's just me.
As your therapist, we need to discuss my fee. I do not take Spam in payment.

msbonne

Boy, you confuse Bob Hope with Brad Pitt?

Where is this world coming to?

Max_Tooney

Thought perhaps it was Greta Garbo, but the eyes aren't quite right.

Max_Tooney

Could be, but Jean Harlow had a weird set of teeth. (Most of her glamour poses were of closed-mouth variety.)

Bubble

Bob Hope and Jean Harlow (maybe). I hope my prize is not out of date Spam again, John.

Maybe someone could tell me how to say No to chocolate/fries/cake etc ......….without resorting to duct tape ! (❀ᴗ❀)

msbonne

Seems to be pretty straight forward to me. A few other Oct. 11ths could be mentioned, but all in all, well done.

PutterDutt

John's take on history always fascinates me!

msbonne

I believe that the man is a young Brad Pitt, and the woman is a young Kristen Stewart.

nanab

mpp is sitting at home saying," pick me, pick me, I know."

Max_Tooney

Ok, film historians. Can you name the two actors?

nanab

LOL Juba, good one!

Juba1010

Is that spam in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?

nanab

You need to stop eating spam right before going to bed.

Juba1010

Why is the guy dressed for a New York winter on the beach? Thanks John. :-)

Max_Tooney

Nooo! :::face palm:::

msbonne

Oct. 11, 1492 - Columbus peered into the distance and thought he saw land. He directed his fleet to head towards the red white and blue coastline.

rswestley

The "outlaws" @Max_Tooney @msbonne @morepiecesplz @nanab @clrtexas @Bubble and of course my therapist @jals …. and anyone else who doesn't mind getting stuck in the mud
