This was the way I did it many years ago. Loved the feeling of flying.

Having come close to dying of the measles, and having had chicken pox that covered me from head to toe and itched horribly, I'm very glad my children and grandchildren were born after there were vaccinations for these diseases. The whole point of vaccination is to prompt your body to make antibodies to the disease, just the way it would if you had the disease--but without having to suffer through the disease itself. That's not hurting or weakening your immune system.
As for asthma, yes, children should be allowed to play in the dirt, hug and sleep with their pets, and
and so on, without being subjected to a constant application of anti-bacterial products.

Oh boy, you have that right thurman about the diseases. Another thing that kind of nipped at me when my kids were in school. Sports day. Nobody loses anymore! It doesn't matter if you cross the finish line the next day, you still get a ribbon. How on earth are kids supposed to learn that they are not always winners? We all lose once in a while. And they are not held back a grade because they didn't do well at all. I remember kids in my school having to repeat a grade, and we never looked down on them for it. That just made them try harder..........Wendy

thurman

I totally agree, Wendy. You learn to be careful early. My other pet peeve is that we don't allow them to have "childhood" diseases (measles, mumps, chicken pox) anymore and we are raising a generation with no immune system. They all have asthma. No wonder. God created these non threatening diseases so that we would develop resistance. (or at least that is my opinion) Evelyn.

I agree thurman. No point in doing obviously really dangerous things, but let the kids have fun. Of all the kids I used to hang around with, and do what would be considered 'dangerous' things today, not one of us broke anything. Oh we had cuts and scrapes, but we'd shake it off and keep playing, bleeding and all. The kids these days are wimps. I think that is why once they get to be in their upper teens, you see all those videos of them standing on top of a racing car, jumping from building to building, etc.......they are letting loose because their parents aren't around to tell them "no", don't do that. Maybe if they had been allowed to be a bit "dangerous" as little kids, they wouldn't be going to the extremes they are now..........Wendy

This is wonderful! A simple picture invokes all of these memories! Childhood was great for, what I presume you commenters are, we baby boomers.

thurman

Now a days, kids aren't allowed to take risks. If parents let their kids on "dangerous" equipment like this someone would call child protective services on them. I often feel sorry for this generation of youngsters. They don't know what fun it is to take risks. (A cast is a fun thing. remember all the signatures) And, we healed and did it all over again. I broke two toes in the same day once. Had a ball !!!! Evelyn.

We didn't have a swing set, and neither did my school. but our picnic place, Hempstead Lake State Park, did. I remember the chains going slack, and that jolt, too. My favorite thing, though, was that there was a tree in front of us, and there were a few branches whose end leaves could, just barely, be reached with an outstretched foot. It was dangerous--easy to slide off the hard seats--but glorious fun! :-)))

Peahen4

We also had a high swing frame and could get real high, high enough that the swing chains weren't tight any more, and I would get a slight jolt. That was really high! And jumping off was fun, too.

Thanks for all your memories and comments.

klocowolf

We used to do this then jump off, pretending we were superman.

bluesmoke

So many memories. We had a rubber tire tied to a single rope to sit in and swing. That was fun too.

jenalou

I remember this like it was yesterday! We had the tallest swing set. Yeah...just like Thurman said...pump it up until you could get no higher then sit down to swing by the arms. I wonder...do kids today do this with knee pads and helmets and elbow pads?!

unicorn3

Do I ever remember this. It took my breath away when I saw this picture. There is no way I could do that today. I must have been insane!! Wendy

thurman

I remember doing this. Then, we would take our feet off and just swing by our arms. So free.
