The tallest (and oldest) of the eleven saguaro gracing my yard. The blooms don't last for long but they smell wonderful. They smell like sweet melons and are a favorite for our local bat poulation.

IYou're quite welcome, Dulsineja.

Dulsineja

Toto, thank you for more information and history in the comments. Amazing!

@Peggystarr3 Saguaro generally do not grow any arms until they are over 75 years. This one has two small arms, and given its height, so we suspect somewhere between 90 and 100 years old.

Peggystarr3

@Toto. Do you have any idea of the age of this saguaro/ i know they are very slow growing - like a matter of inches per year. at 25 ft this has to be OLD. it has not grown any arms yet either. does it have arms/ i just realized the picture shows a very small portion of the 25 ft.

Toto

She's a brute all right.

pumpkinhead

Yowser! That's HUGE!

Toto

Yup - This is actually the tallest (and oldest) of my small saguaro forest. At 25 plus feet, its easy to use as a guide to keep me straight when I'm doing the backstroke in the pool.

In your YARD???????

Toto

Peggy, as I understand, during drought years, the saguaro produce more blooms to increase the odds for a new genetation. All the blooms are not not necessary during good years when weather favors the seedlings,

Peggystarr3

30 mi south of tucson puts you fairly close to the border, doesn't it/ i envy you your 9 saguaros - i would have been happy with one1 the picture shows all the blooms that will be fairly solid with gorgeous blooms. i fell in love with the saguaros while living 10 yrs in mesa. since i moved at the 10 yr mark to texas i was glad I never did get one so i didn't have togo thru the pain of leaving one behind. lol Most of the blooms I saw were on the crown of the very top of the cacti. having the blooms on the trunk is just fabulous. 0x

The previous owner had planted a saguaro for each of her grandchildren. Over the years, however, they had become hidden behind other non-desert type foliage. We had all the non-native plants removed and were amazed by the beauty of what was left, including my towering sentries that seem to guard my home.

Wow, a majestic cactus and such pretty flowers! Your garden must be very architectural with so many of them - lovely!

It is so nice you are letting us visit your backyard, for many of us it is totally exotic. :) We can see the photos, but the blossom's scents are for you. We can only imagine them through your descriptions. Thanks again.

Toto

Hi Marina! The turquoise sky that time of day really brought out the green of the saguaro. Looking at my sentries, I find it easy to understand why they are protected and mean so much to the people of the Sonora.

MarinaNephele

This is a miracle, I've never imagined that Saguaro would have such beautiful flowers of divine fragrance. Thanks for sharing this. Marina

Dulsineja, my whole is desert landscaping with not a blade or non-arid environment plant to be found. I miss the colors sometime but have found a lot of joy in my little piece of desert.
Your welcome, Carpej, thanks for stopping by.
HI Raaike -my cacti are certainly not as gorgeous as your gardens but, you're right, they make me smile, especially when the north is blanketed in snow.
Peggystarr, I live about 30 miles south of Tucson in the Sonara Desert. I have lived in Germany several times however, and I translated my response to 2010August into German as that is his/her native tongue.
Thanks, Alias and Putem.

That is absolutely beautiful.

:)

Peggystarr3

what a gorgeous saguaro and their pretty little white flowers. do you live in germany or arizona/ saguaros only grow in the sonoma desert in south half of arizona. i don't understand how you could live in germany and have 11 of them flourishing. As far as i know they can't live in cooler climates. i used to live in Mesa, Az and I was fascinated by the saguaros. my upper case is not working on my keyboard.

Raaike

Toto, how beautiful those cacti in full bloom, it just makes you happy.
Thank you for taking pictures of it and that we can enjoy it with you. :-))) ♥

carpej

thank you.

Dulsineja

Thank you so much for your photos and info. I only have cacti in pots. Last year one of them was blooming, it was so beautiful.

Toto

Sehr stachelig
