Why are you reporting this puzzle?

For several weeks now, the only visitors to my feeders have been members of the Paridae family, with the odd woodpigeon or two popping in. Now that the more wintery weather has arrived, suddenly the feeders are being emptied every day, and there is a greater variety of species coming to feed. This male Great Spotted Woodpecker has made a welcome return, bringing a splash of colour to his favourite perch.

And he's got color! The few colorful birds I have rarely sit nicely. :-)

WillTapper

Thanks, Ginni. Now and then I get a good one, and this Woodpecker sits nicely for me! :-))

How did I miss this beauty? Great shot, Will!

WillTapper

Thank you, schutkleur.
Yes, the feeders in my garden are in the open, about five metres from the house, but close to bushes so the birds have plenty of cover in which to hide from predators. Most small birds make a quick dash for a seed, then disappear into the bushes to eat it, but this guy proudly sits on his perch for a while, letting everyone know he's 'King of the castle'. And with a beak like his, no-one challenges him!
As for sunshine ... well I think I have the same problem. My house is situated in the bowl of a steep horse-shoe shaped hill, topped by tall trees, so, particularly at this time of year, the garden only sees direct sunlight just as it sets in the west!

This is a wonderful shot WillTapper!!! I'm glad he has returned to your garden.
'Mine' is back too. Sofar only the female. But she's coming for a bite several times a day. Pity though that my side balcony doesn't get much sunshine this time of year. The colours are so much better in somewhat brighter light. Like yours. Your feeder probably is much more in the open:)

Dulsineja

Go ahead, Will! It is not so easy to take a good picture of a moving animal.

WillTapper

I'm glad you like it, Jacki and Dulsineja. I don't take very many pictures worth publishing these days, but I thought this one needed sharing :-)))

Dulsineja

Thank you WillTapper for the image and the text beside it. :) I have also seen the woodpecker in our orchard this week! One of my favourite birds.

Handsome fellow! Thank you WillTapper!
