Yesterday, we took you to Iceland to admire the Skógafoss waterfall. Today, we travel to Southern Africa and let the Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya ("The Smoke That Thunders"), take our breath away.

Victoria Falls is one of the world's largest and most spectacular waterfalls. It is located on the Zambezi River and forms the natural border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa. The falls are approximately 1,708 meters (5,604 feet) wide and drop about 108 meters (354 feet) into a narrow gorge, creating a dramatic curtain of water and mist visible from miles away.

Scottish explorer David Livingstone was the first European to document the falls in 1855, naming them after Queen Victoria. Indigenous peoples had long revered the site, and its local name reflects the thunderous sound and misty spray that define the landscape.

During the rainy season, up to 500 million liters of water plunge over the edge each minute. This immense power creates a towering mist that can rise over 400 meters (1,300 feet) into the air. Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site vital to the region's ecosystem, supporting diverse flora and fauna ♥

Copperpenny

I was there nearly 60 years ago at age 12. Unforgettable, especially because I slipped while walking on the muddy path along the rim at the western end of the chasm.
