Horses are herd animals; they really need to belong to a herd. If that is not possible, other animal companions can help fill the void. "Other animal" can include people, too, though we are poor substitutes for the equine kind. I'm pretty sure the solitary horse I recently gave up considered me a part of her "herd." But now she has joined an equine herd, and I'm sure she must be happier.

I've heard that many horses enjoy other animal companions too - from a cat to a goat or sheep, etc.

She really was in "horse heaven". I wish I had a companion for her at our house because she loves to be with the other horses. Hopefully, she will enjoy riding together soon and will be content to live alone again. Maybe someday I'll get her a buddy. Till then...will have to be just us.

"All this for me? Really?" I can just imagine a few seconds later, kicking up her heels. :)
