Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French Impressionist artist renowned for his depictions of movement, particularly in ballet dancers.
Surprisingly, Degas preferred to be called a Realist and often employed traditional techniques. His diverse works included painting, sculpture, and printmaking, focusing on urban scenes and human anatomy. Degas innovatively used pastels, elevating them to a primary medium.
In later life, his deteriorating eyesight led him to sculpt more frequently.
