An old and weather worn Talos missile gracing the front of the museum. The Talos was a long-range naval surface-to-air missile, and was among the earliest surface-to-air missiles to equip United States Navy ships.

Toto

Lucky find, it was located across the street from where we ate one night.

Beekay

I can see your interest in this museum. Did you know it was there or was it a lucky find?

Toto

White pickets for everyone, bluesmoke.

bluesmoke

Me too mariolyn, first thing--lol

Toto

Not to mention geography, pirates, WASPS (Women Air Service Pilots), the Bumblebee Project, Camp Davis, Suzy. The museum is a building built in 1946 and used by the government to assemble missiles for a secret missile operation being conducted on Topsail Island. The island was used during the WWII to train anti-aircraft units at Camp David. The targets used were pulled by planes being piloted by the WASPS. It's a fascinating peek into the island.

pumpkinhead

Who would think to put missiles and shells in the same museum? :)

Toto

Just high enough to remind parents not to let their kids climb on the missile, but low enough to provide a good view, and lovely enough to be reminder of how nice white picket fences can be. :-)

mariolyn

I'm noticing that nice white FENCE.
