I saw a bald eagle snatch up a duck on a lake. The eagle circled a submerged duck then dove and snatched it the moment it surfaced. It looked like poetry.
It's called "mobbing," klchapz25. Smaller birds will attack a larger bird, usually a raptor, to protect a member of their flock. The practice is not uncommon. I've seen it with crows and eagles; it's quite a loud procedure and often the smaller birds save their flockmate.
