Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Two angles of one snake, found in northeastern Wisconsin. Would love to know what kind it is...?

I understand! Thanks Dusty!

Had no idea what kind of snake this is.....Unfortunately, I am one of those, where if it has no legs, or more than four legs, there's a great chance I want nothing to do with it!

Thank you wyzowl! I googled cottonmouth after reading your comment. They do look similar, but apparently they don't live up in this area. But I appreciate the thought!

Thank you canoekaw! Jacki agrees!

Thank you Jacki! It sure does look like the same snake! And I appreciate not only the ID, but also the description of its behavior. It didn't move the whole time I was looking at it. I tried not to get too close. -- Used the zoom lens.

Thank you Shirley! It DOES sound harmless. I just read that some people even keep them as pets! (Not me!)

Thank you Jillian! I understand! :)

Thank you Suzy! Yes, I don't get too close!

See a snake. Back away from the snake. Eeek!

JillianB

Eeek I don’t know and nor do I want to be introduced, thank you.

Shian2

It looks like the one in Jacki's link, sounds harmless, but I'd run the other way if I seen one ☺ Thanks, Patti.

They mostly eat "toads and other amphibians"

From Wikipedia: When threatened, the neck is flattened and the head is raised off the ground, not unlike a cobra. They also hiss and will strike, but they do not attempt to bite. The result can be likened to a high speed head-butt. If this threat display does not work to deter a would-be predator, a hognose snake will often roll onto its back and play dead, going so far as to emit a foul musk from its cloaca and let its tongue hang out of its mouth

Looks like this one:

Eastern Hog-nosed Snake (Heterodon platirhinos)

Could it be a Hognose snake? I can not tell if the mouth is turned up.

wyzowl65

Could it be a cottonmouth?
