We have lots of sparrows, in our yard...but, I don't think this is a sparrow. Is it? If you know, please post the name in the comments box. Thanks, much!

Indeed a House Sparrow. Or in Holland (native bird there!) juist called 'sparrow'. A small bird, mostly living in groups, in towns/villages. It is not a bird found in the woods. They don't sing, but 'tjilp, tjilp,". They love to live in groups and dodge in and out of hedges near houses and often have nest just underneath rooftiles.
They don't wake up as early as f.i. blackbirds do, that start singing when it is just getting light. The sparrow starts (awakens) when the sun goes up.
They do live near us, but normally are not interested in people (Robins do, they watch when you work in the garden and come near to get a worm/insect). They eat anything and like bird feeders too.
In cities however you can see them feed on terraces where people have meals and especially coffee with bread or cake. Some even will sit on the table and wait for crumbs!
If you lean back a moment the most cheeky ones will even take what they want!!
But as the bird is so small, and so funny-cheeky, they often are tolerated, which makes them bolder!!

Thank you, all, for your comments.

Hey! What's wrong with McDonald's??? LOL

Longbow1

Even McDonalds? I knew they weren't fussy.

European House sparrow. Non-native to No. America. Prone to attacking our native Eastern Bluebirds while on the nest, and pecking their eggs\killing their chicks. They're ubiquitous across the states because of big box garden centers. And, they'll eat anything, including McDonald's.

Longbow1

Certainly it is a house sparrow - a male, with the black throat and chest. Cheeky fellows, but pleasant to have around.

Glad to help. I don't know that many birds -- just happened to recognize this one. Thanks for the nice puzzle!

bhelen

Thanks, PLG1958. You are right!!! I couldn't find this bird in my bird book, amongst the other sparrows...but, I see it now! DAH! ;-)))
