Enlarged poster of the Apostles, a page from the Book of Kells.

This is what @Audslibrary posted about the Book of Kells:
"Trinity College, Dublin - Ireland holds a treasure, it is the Book of Kells

It may be the most famous and treasured illuminated manuscript in the world.
'Illuminated" means that all that 'shiny gold' is real gold - powdered and mixed with a sticking subtance called gum Arabic. Gold never changes or dulls. It is heavy.
You may have book that is more than an hundred years old that has gold on its page edges. Pick it up. It is heavy.

The Book of Kells (800 AD) is an illuminated manuscript of the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) of the Christian New Testament. The text of the Gospels, in Latin, is largely drawn from the Vulgate, although it also includes several passages drawn from the earlier versions of the Bible known as the Vetus Latina. It is a masterwork of Western calligraphy.

The manuscript today comprises 340 leaves or folios; for a total 680 pages. While the four New Testament gospels comprise the main portion of the work, they are not the only subjects included. Since 1953, it has been bound in four volumes. Housed at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. The work is the most famous of the medieval illuminated manuscripts for the intricacy, detail, and majesty of the illustrations.

History -
There are at least four competing theories about the manuscript's place of origin and time of completion. The theory most widely believed is that the book, or perhaps just the text, may have been created at Iona and then completed in Kells. Columban Monks (the order founded by St. Columba), flee their island of Iona monastary in the wake Viking invaders, and at Kells the manuscript they are working on, is completed.

It is this story that is told in the 2009 animated film, 'The Secret of Kells', ... a link to that film is included here. ...

Here is a video link - not to a scholarly study of the manuscript - but to a highly acclaimed international animated film that tells a story about the creation of the manuscript. We're lucky that the whole film, The Secret of Kells (2009), is available on youtube (I hope this link works where you are). It was not created for the 'kiddie' audience and may have some dark scenes that are disturbing. ... This 2009 film, The Secret of Kells, tells of the monastery at Kells consumed with the building of a wall. . . to hold back the evil of what lies in the forest beyond.

But our young Brendan embarks on a new life of adventure when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from the island of Iona, carrying a book brimming with wisdom and powers.

To help complete the book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears to enter that enchanted forest where the mythical creatures live. Will he find the plants he has been sent to find - the plants that will become the colors of ink needed for the book? Will determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil?

You're both welcome, Bernadette. Audrey, again my thanks for recommending "The Secret of Kells." Viewing it beforehand greatly enriched the experience of this exhibit and other aspects of your trip, as well.

Thank you for your interest and comments, my friends. Before our trip, Peter and I ended up watching the film over two nights, which was a good way to digest it, I think. It really did increase my appreciation for the visit to Trinity College as well as other parts of Ireland, including a fort that will appear in later posts. I'm very grateful to @Audslibrary for introducing the film and sharing the link.

LizzyK
